Maintenance Tips/Suggestions: When
possible, refer to your car's owner's manual for the
recommended jump-start procedure and follow it exactly. Use
extreme care when working around batteries as batteries emit
explosive gas that can ignite if jumper cables are connected
improperly. The following procedure outlines the general steps
involved when jump-starting.
- Make sure that the vehicles are not
touching.
- Turn off the engine and all electrical
accessories.
- Connect one of the positive (+) cable
clamps (red) to the positive terminal of the discharged battery.
- Connect the positive clamp (red) from the
other end of the jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the
good battery.
- Connect the clamp from the negative
jumper cable (black) to the negative (-) terminal of the good
battery.
- Connect the negative cable clamp (black) on the other end of the
jumper cable to the engine block or other good engine metal surface on the
vehicle with the discharged battery. Do
not connect the negative clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the
discharged battery. This may
trigger a spark and result in explosion of the gases surrounding
the battery, causing injury.
- Make sure that the jumper cables are clear of all moving parts and
start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged battery. To remove the
cables, reverse the connection order, starting with the negative cable on
the vehicle with the discharged battery.
After the vehicle with the discharged battery is running, take the vehicle to a reliable repair facility to have the electrical system tested and the cause of the discharged battery determined and corrected.
